Chéri Samba is the undisputed king of popular painting from the Democratic Republic of Congo.
Samba’s artworks first came to international attention in the 1989 exhibition Magiciens de la terre (Magicians of the Earth) at the Centre Pompidou and the Grande Halle de la Villette in Paris.
His artworks have been exhibited at the Museum of Fine Arts in Houston; the National Museum of African Art in Washington, DC; the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao; the Tate Modern in London.
